About Oswualdo Magana

March in Lamont is the green month — winter rain still in the ground, the ditches running, lawns growing faster than at any other time of year. Oswualdo Magana meets it at first light, mower off the trailer before the school buses roll, working down streets he knows house by house. His is the small-scale kind of care: grass cut to the right height and no shorter, edges walked slowly, gates latched behind him. By the time the heat arrives in June, the lawns on his route have deep roots and a fighting chance. He works Lamont and the neighboring stretches of Arvin and Greenfield, one yard at a time.
