About Gary's Gardening

February rain crosses Lakeside in short grey bands, and afterward the Eucalyptus Hills smell like camphor and wet decomposed granite. Gary's Gardening works those slopes, where driveways tilt, lots step down in terraces, and a lawn is usually a small bright shelf with shrubs leaning over it. The work is mowing and edging, trimming hedges and shrubs back into shape, clearing beds of the weeds that come up overnight after a storm, and carting the cuttings away down the hill. Rain here is a gift with a short shelf life — a few weeks of soft ground and fast growth before the dry returns. Timing the cut to that window is the whole art of it, and a hedge squared off against a green hillside is the proof.
