Out toward the Casa de Oro edge of La Presa the old avocado and citrus trees throw enough shade to change how a lawn grows: thin under the canopy, thick where the sun lands. Fernando's landscaping cuts to the yard that is actually there — mowing, trimming the tree rings and fence lines, shaping shrubs back off the windows, hauling the clippings out. August is dust and stillness in these blocks, and a freshly mown yard is one of the few things that still looks alive at midday. The details carry it: a straight edge at the driveway, no green left on the sidewalk. That is the entire job, done all the way through.
