Dawn in La Mesa arrives soft: the marine layer slides in overnight, pools in the canyons below Grossmont, and hangs over the water at Lake Murray until the sun burns it back by mid-morning. The Valentine Grind starts in that gray hour, when the blades are cool and heavy with damp and a mower lays down its cleanest line. This is lawn care for the Jewel of the Hills — mowing the level blocks, edging along sidewalks that tilt and climb, string trimming into the corners a deck can't reach, shrubs kept to their shape, feeding and weed control timed to the winter rains that turn these hillsides green again. The grind is the point of the name: the same yard, the same week, the same care, until a place stops looking tended and simply looks right. By the time the trolley runs down La Mesa Boulevard, the clippings are loaded out and the edge along the walk is crisp enough to catch the light.
