At Jenner, the Russian River finishes its long run to the sea, and harbor seals haul out on the sandbar at the river mouth to doze between tides. Akita Landscape, Inc. tends the yards on the slope above that meeting of fresh water and salt, where grass grows thick and quick through the wet months. The work is lawn care through and through: mowing on a steady rhythm, edging walks and beds until they read sharp from the road, and clearing away whatever winter storms toss into a garden. On a summer morning, when the fog peels back off the estuary, a freshly cut lawn here looks combed by the sea breeze itself. It is satisfying work, keeping a home neat at the very spot where a river gives itself to the ocean.
