In May the mountain finally lets go of winter: Strawberry Creek runs quick with snowmelt, lilacs open in dooryards, and the air smells of warm pine and turned earth. That is the season Idyllwild Gardens waits for — planting beds waking up, lawns greening between the boulders, gardens asked to be gardens again after months under needles and snow. The work runs from mowing and trimming to bed care and cleanup, all of it shaped to yards where granite and cedar set the boundaries. A mountain garden is a small clearing held open on purpose, and holding it open is the whole craft. Done well, it gives a cabin its brightest room: the one outside.
