Fruitdale takes its name from the orchards that once ran in long rows across the Santa Clara Valley, and the promise in that name still lives in its small yards today. Above the Cut mows and edges yards across this compact unincorporated pocket ringed by San Jose, where the Santa Cruz Mountains rise blue to the southwest when the air is clear and winter rain turns every patch of grass startlingly green. Each visit means mowing at the right height, edges cut clean along the walk, and clippings swept so the driveway looks as finished as the turf. When the dry season comes and the far hills fade to gold, a well-kept lawn reads like a small, deliberate act of care. That is the standard here: a yard lifted just a little above the ordinary.
