Fontana still carries its windrows — long ranks of eucalyptus set out to stand between the citrus and the wind — and their shade falls across half the older lawns in town. Sims Trees of Fontana works under that canopy: mowing and edging grass that grows in dappled light, trimming shrubs, raking out the leaf litter that keeps coming down all winter. On a clear afternoon you can see snow up on Mount Baldy from these streets while the mower is still running in shirtsleeves, which is a very particular kind of luck. Turf beneath a canopy asks for a lighter hand and a closer eye, and it gets both. The work runs through Fontana and out toward Rialto and Rancho Cucamonga.
