By late summer the slopes above the Santa Margarita River have gone the color of straw, and everything that shot up in the spring is standing tall and brittle. San Diego weed mowing spends those months knocking overgrowth back down to the ground on lots and yard edges around Fallbrook, then mowing, edging and trimming the kept turf so the line between yard and hillside is obvious again. There is a particular pleasure in walking off a property that arrived shaggy and leaves it flat, cut and legible. Autumn wind finds a lot less to carry when the ground is short. That's a good day twice over.
