At low tide the bay pulls back and leaves a shining plain of mud where egrets pick their way, and the whole flat edge of town smells of salt and cut grass. Powell Landscape Materials works the lawns down on that low ground in Eureka, where the water table sits close and the turf stays thick from October clear through June. A day here is mowing on a set rotation, edging along drives and walks, trimming what the mower cannot reach, hand-weeding the bed lines and carting the debris off. Grass in this valley wants to run; the craft is staying half a step ahead of it. Driving home past a yard cut that morning, still holding its lines under a flat gray sky, is the whole reason for the route.
