Peck Road Water Conservation Park holds its water still enough in the early hours that the egrets stand in it like punctuation. El Monte wakes slowly around that stretch — a heron lifting, the San Gabriels going pink above the rooftops — and that is the hour this crew likes for mowing, when the blades are cool and the cut comes off clean. Lawn care here means reading a valley that goes tan in August and green again with the first winter rain, and knowing what each yard wants in between. Mowing, edging, string trimming, hedge and shrub shaping and seasonal cleanups, done so the line where turf meets walkway is straight enough to sight down.
