Estevan's garderning

About Estevan's garderning

On winter mornings the tule fog settles over East Bakersfield so thick the mulberries dissolve at the end of the block, and the yards go quiet and silver. Estevan's garderning works those mornings anyway — raking down the last of the leaf fall, cutting back roses, tidying beds so that when the fog lifts, the garden underneath is ready. Come spring the same hands are pushing mowers through fast new growth and shaping hedges along driveways warm by ten o'clock. It is unhurried, close-in work: soil, blade, broom, done right. Neighbors from East Bakersfield to East Niles know the look of a yard kept this way — settled, swept, cared for.
