February is when Culver City gets its real weather: two or three days of steady rain, gutters running along Overland, and then a week later the whole city flushes green at once. Evergreen West Coast plans around that — mowing that suddenly needs doing twice as often, edging, weed control before the wet ground gives every seed a head start, and cleanup after a storm passes. The growing season here is short and loud, and staying in front of it is the whole trick. A lawn that comes out of the rains dense and level instead of shaggy and thin is a yard someone has been paying attention to. The rest of the year rides on those few weeks.
