Buttonwillow is San Joaquin Valley to the bone — flat to every horizon, cotton and almonds in the section lines, the old buttonwillow tree still standing as the town's namesake. In country organized around crops, a home lawn is its own small field, and Creative Landscaping farms it with the same seriousness: mowed even, edged square, kept green against the long Kern County summer. Winter brings the tule fog down over the valley and softens everything to gray; the yards emerge from it trimmed and waiting. Between the interstate traffic and the irrigated miles, these squares of tended green are where the town actually lives. Keeping them handsome is the whole idea.
