Morning arrives in Burbank over the Verdugos, the light sliding down the ridge into the flats while the Chandler bikeway is still cool underfoot. Zef Landscaping keeps the yards on those blocks — the shaded lots out toward the Rancho, the deep frontages of Magnolia Park, the flat grid running down to the river channel — mowing, edging and trimming, then clearing the clippings off before the Valley heat settles in for the afternoon. Summer here runs long and dry, and when the Santa Anas come down out of the canyons they leave every lawn scattered by morning, so a yard in this town is something you tend on purpose. The pleasure is in the finish: rows laid straight, a crisp line snapped along the walk and the driveway apron, hedges squared, the concrete blown clean so the edge reads sharp from the street. Then the winter rains come and the short green weeks turn Stough Canyon bright, and the grass wants cutting again just as the jacarandas start thinking about it.
