The first real rain usually finds Berkeley in October, and within a week the ground around Indian Rock turns from tan to a startling green. Seth Gardening meets that turn with the ordinary, necessary work: mowing as the growth takes off, edging beds and paths, trimming, and clearing the leaves the same storms bring down. The Thousand Oaks streets bend around stone outcrops and old retaining walls, so no two yards share a shape — each one gets its own approach. A lawn cut well the morning after a wet night has a smell to it that nothing else matches. That is the season this kind of gardening was made for.
