By April the ballfield at Willard Park is in use every afternoon and the streets around it fill with the sound of it. Green's Gardens keeps the front yards nearby on a steady cycle through that season, when the grass is running and a two-week gap turns a lawn into a hayfield. Each stop gets the same care: mown even, edged along the walk, border beds weeded, trimmings gathered up and gone. The trick in spring is never letting anything get ahead of you, which means arriving on schedule whether a yard looks like it needs it or not. Come May the whole block still looks kept, and that is the reward.
