By six in the evening the shadow of Mount San Jacinto reaches all the way across the south end of Beaumont, and the pavement finally gives its heat back to the sky. That is the good hour for turf here — grass cut late in an August day, when the blades are not fighting the sun, holds its color the way it should, and the mower stripes lie down soft and parallel across the front. Some afternoons the thunderheads stack up over the peaks and the whole Pass smells like rain that may or may not arrive, and the work goes on either way: mowed, edged, trimmed around every post and valve box, hedges squared, walks blown clean. Down along Noble Creek the cottonwoods do their own thing, but a yard needs a hand, and there is pride in handing one back looking sharper than it did that morning. This is Inland Empire ground, dry and stubborn and generous once it is tended, and keeping it green from one end of Beaumont to the other is the whole job.
