Come November the cottonwoods and sycamores along the Kern River Parkway let go all at once, and for a few weeks every yard in Bakersfield is wearing somebody else's leaves. Sub green lawn and clean up is built for that stretch — raking and hauling, clearing beds down to bare soil, taking the lawn short and clean before the cool weather slows its growth. The rest of the year it runs as mowing, edging, trimming and weed control on a regular round. There is a particular satisfaction in a yard that was ankle-deep in debris at eight and swept bare by noon. The work covers Bakersfield and the towns close in around it.
