Mack's Lawn Care

About Mack's Lawn Care

Out at Contra Loma the reservoir lies flat as a coin until the first wind of the day comes across it. Mack's Lawn Care is already moving by then, in the blue hour before the heat, when the grass still holds the night's cool and cuts clean. Mowing, edging, string trimming, hauling off everything the week dropped — plain work, and not a plain result: a straight green line at the border and nothing loose anywhere inside it. In a town where June through September opens like an oven door, a lawn kept on a rhythm is what keeps a yard a yard. Come back at noon and the place looks cared for all the way from the street.
