Up on the Modoc Plateau, the growing season is short and the light is enormous. Alturas sits where the Pit River winds through hay ground and sagebrush, with the Warner Mountains holding snow on the eastern skyline deep into spring, and when the grass finally comes on in June it comes on all at once. Modoc Family Mowing works that brief, bright window — mowing, trimming, and cleaning up yards across town while the days stretch long and the evenings stay cool. In a place this far from anywhere, a kept lawn is its own kind of statement: somebody lives here, and cares. The mowers run until the frost says stop.
