January mornings at the foot of the Catalinas' north face arrive with frost on the grass and a mist over the Cañada del Oro that burns off around nine. The Preserve at SaddleBrooke keeps grounds and yards through that cold stretch — mowing, edging, trimming shrubs and hedges, clearing beds of everything the wind brought down. Winter is when desert plantings show their bones, and any ragged shape is plain to see. Work starts early and finishes before the sun tops the ridge, with the borders left sharp. By the time anyone is out walking, the only evidence is a lawn cut even and a walk swept clean.
