West of town the country climbs into the Apache-Sitgreaves, and the wind coming down off the pines carries needles into every yard between there and Main. Woodland Building Center clears them — turf and beds blown out, the mat that has knitted into the grass raked free, the load hauled away instead of piled at the curb. The rest of the year is mowing to a line, edging where lawn meets concrete, and trimming close around trunks and posts without scarring bark. Grass under ponderosa shade is a patient project: fed on time, cut a touch high, kept clear of duff so it can breathe. A shaded lawn kept close and green beside that forest is a fine-looking thing.
