In late October the cottonwoods along the San Pedro turn a yellow you can pick out from the highway, and the nights over Cochise County go dark enough to count stars by. Southwest Desert Images works that season the way a photographer works light — reading a yard for what it could be, then mowing, edging and raking until the picture holds together. Fall cleanups, cutting height stepped down as the days shorten, weeds taken out of the decomposed granite before winter can hide them. The properties run from Sierra Vista out through Hereford and Palominas toward the river bottom. What gets left behind is simple and composed: even turf, clear borders, nothing out of place.
