Winter on the Arizona Strip is the season the desert gives back: mild afternoons, cold clear nights, and a wind that runs the whole length of Beaver Dam Wash. Scenic Landscape Services uses those months for cutting back, weeding and hauling out — the yard work that goes easiest while the ground is still cool. By the time the creosote blooms again the beds are clean and the grass is even and low, ready for a summer that will test both. There is a particular pleasure in a yard trimmed square at the desert's edge, where nothing else out there is square at all. The work runs through Scenic and the small communities along the Virgin River.
