Late in the day the Dome Rock Mountains go copper, and the shadow of every shrub in Quartzsite stretches clear across the yard. That is the hour A Toe Truck likes for a last pass — mower cooling, the edge along the drive cut clean, clippings gathered and gone. Yards out here are half green and half stone, and both halves want a hand: grass held even, trimmer work tight around block walls and mesquite trunks, rock raked back to level. A swept walk and a straight edge out front say plainly that the place is looked after. It is small work, done carefully, and in that low light the desert makes it show.
