Highway 95 runs north out of Quartzsite through open desert toward the Colorado, and the early light along it is long and low and forgiving. La Paz Medical Services keeps yards on that side of town on a steady rotation: mow, edge, trim the shrubs off the eaves and walls, then blow the drive down clean. Between visits the desert always sends something — pods, blown grass, a branch off a mesquite — and the next stop takes it away. Lawns here earn their green, so they are cut at a height that keeps the roots shaded. Little of it is complicated; all of it gets noticed.
