Where the last row of houses ends, the chaparral picks straight back up — cholla, scrub oak, a wash headed off toward who-knows-where — and that boundary is where Urban Desert Landscape spends its days. The work is mowing, edging, trimming along fence lines and borders, and yard cleanup, so the lawn stops exactly where it was meant to stop and the desert keeps everything past it. At dusk the Bradshaws go violet behind the rooftops, and a kept yard holds its shape in the failing light better than anything else on the block. Holding that line means coming back on a rhythm, because the wild side of the fence is endlessly patient. Prescott Valley is home ground, with Prescott, Dewey-Humboldt and Chino Valley just up the road.
