Prescott Valley sits on the floor of a basin with mountains on nearly every side — the Bradshaws to the south, Mingus off east, Granite Mountain west past Prescott — and in January the light comes in low and sideways and shows every uneven thing. Basin Outdoor Services works with that: lawns mowed to one even height, edges cut straight along walks and drives, winter debris cleared out of the corners where the wind stacks it. Cold mornings in Lonesome Valley are bright and still, and the frost burns off the grass by nine. The dormant stretch is not the off season; it is when a yard is easiest to get square. Come spring, the lawns kept through the cold months are the ones that green up first.
