Winter is the season for trees in the Avra Valley, when the mesquite stand bare, the ironwood rest and a limb's whole shape shows plain against cold blue sky. SouthWest Environmental Management ( Tree and Yard Services ) works Picture Rocks through those months — pruning and trimming, taking out deadwood and hazard limbs, hauling the brush off and leaving the ground raked behind them. The yard work carries the rest of the calendar: mowing, edging, weed control, shrub shaping and cleanups. A desert tree cut right in January puts on shade by May, and shade is the local currency. Stepping back to see a mesquite thinned so the wind passes through and the light falls in pieces on the ground is the good part of the day.
