Out past Baseline Road, where the flower fields once ran, the saguaros on South Mountain open white blooms after dark in May and shut them again by noon. Western Cactus works the lawns in that stretch of south Phoenix — mowing, edging where turf meets gravel, trimming the margins, and clearing cuttings so the desert plantings stay crisp against the green. A yard on this side of town is usually half lawn and half Sonoran ground, and the seam between them is where the whole thing either holds together or comes apart. Keeping that seam true, week to week, is the craft of it. By June the heat writes the schedule, so trucks roll at first light and the yards are done before the mountain goes white with glare.
