Give the Sonoran winter a few good rains and the desert out past the last Mesa subdivision answers in March: brittlebush going yellow across the slopes, ocotillo tipped in red, creosote sharp in the air after every shower. Yards built from that palette — granite, natives, a drip line running quietly underneath — are their own kind of beautiful, and they still want tending. The Desert Root looks after them along with the lawns: mowing and edging where there is turf, trimming natives and shrubs to their own shape rather than a box, checking emitters and drip lines, refreshing granite, and keeping the weeds from taking the open ground. The good result here is subtle — a yard that looks like it grew where it stands and simply appears well. That is worth doing carefully, visit after visit, all year long.
