Spring on the Many Farms flats arrives loud: wind off the mesa, dust running low across the road, the cottonwoods down by the lake finally letting out their leaves. Yards up here take some patience, and the work goes the way it always has — mow what has grown, trim the edges back, gather what the wind brought and carry it off. Many Farms Animal Shelter keeps lawns cut and cleared through the growing season, when the days stretch long and the light stays gold past supper. Out on the high desert a tended patch of green shows for miles, and that is the point of it. Kept regularly, it stays easy.
