Out where Leupp sits beside the Little Colorado River, a lawn is a small green argument against a great deal of open land. LIV Lawn and Construction takes up that argument with mower, trimmer and rake, cutting grass low and even, squaring off the borders and hauling away whatever the wind has dragged in. Summer mornings on this high plateau start cool and clear, the night's chill lingering until the sun lifts over the eastern mesas, and that is when a yard comes together easiest. In October the cottonwoods along the river bottom go yellow, and their leaves get gathered before they can pile into every corner. What stays behind is a yard that looks tended on purpose, its edges straight against the red earth.
