At dusk the Topock Marsh goes the color of pewter, and the herons and egrets that spent the day out in the refuge start moving along the shallows. Golden Shores is quiet at that hour — heat lifting, swallows out, the far bank turning violet. Golden Shores Community Center handles the mowing on the grounds here, runs the edger along the walks, trims what the deck cannot reach, and clears the cut away so the ground stays open and usable. A field mown level and clean is an invitation; people gather on it without thinking about why. Doing that well, week after week, is the pleasure of the work.
