Round Valley opens wide around Eagar, hay meadows running east to Escudilla standing blue on the edge of it, and the Little Colorado beginning small somewhere in between. White Mountains Tree Service works this high country where the ponderosa meets the meadow — trimming, structural pruning, and removals of pines that have grown too close to a roof or a line. At seven thousand feet a heavy wet snow can load a spruce until it splits, and opening a buried driveway is winter's regular business. Summer brings its own trouble, hail and hard wind off the mountains in the afternoon, and the cleanup after is unglamorous and complete. There is satisfaction in a stand thinned just enough to let light reach the aspen underneath.
