Spring runoff turns the San Francisco River loud, and Clifton hears it through open windows before anyone is properly awake. Deasons' Landscaping starts the day along those river-bottom lots, mowing what the water and warm air have brought up fast, trimming the edges where mesquite crowds a fence. By June the current has quieted and the work turns to keeping things honest, a lawn held at one height and a border kept true against the gravel. The reward is simple enough: a yard that looks tended from the street, in a town where the canyon leaves little room to hide. Clifton and Morenci fill most of the week, with runs down the valley as needed.
