A new lot northwest of Casas Adobes starts as graded dirt, a hose bib and a great deal of sky. Joes Landscape Design begins there — laying out where the walk runs, where shade will be wanted in ten summers, where gravel gives way to planting and where a strip of turf actually earns its water. The drawing turns into borders, plants and ground, and then into the trimming and mowing that keep it looking like the drawing. Standing on a finished yard that was bare caliche in March does not get old. Out toward Cortaro the desert comes right up to the fence line, and a good layout shakes hands with it instead of arguing.
