Morning comes to Camp Verde early and sideways, gold light spilling in from the east before the cottonwoods along the Verde River have finished shaking off the cool. That is the best hour for mowing — grass still holding the night's damp, blades cutting clean, the smell of fresh-cut lawn drifting toward the old parade ground at Fort Verde. Out here above three thousand feet a lawn is something you coax rather than inherit, and every yard along Salt Mine Road and Main Street gets treated like it earned its green. Edges are walked twice and trimmed tight to walk and drive, so the line between grass and gravel reads as deliberate as a fence rail. By the time the valley heat stands up at noon, the clippings are hauled off and the yard looks like somebody loves it.
