West of town the Black Hills climb toward Mingus Mountain, dry and folded and full of country a person could walk into and not come out of for days. Down on the valley floor the work is simpler and just as satisfying: grass cut even, borders edged, trim line run tight to fence posts and mailbox stones. Cool shoulder-season mornings are the sweet spot, when the mower throws dew and the whole yard gives off that green smell. Beds get weeded, clippings get cleared, and the yard is handed back ready to be sat in. Camp Verde, Middle Verde, Cottonwood and Clarkdale are all within the loop.
