Bisbee is built into the Mule Mountains at an angle — yards terraced behind retaining walls, staircases where another town would have put a street, every square of level ground a small victory. Border GroundsKeeping works that vertical town and the flatter blocks down in Warren and out toward Naco, mowing, edging and trimming along walls and steps, lifting weeds off the terraces and the treads. At better than five thousand feet the seasons are real here: oak and juniper on the hills, brown slopes gone green within a week of the summer rains, frost lingering on the shady side of the canyon in January. They feed the turf, cut the growth back, and carry the cleanup down the hill, which is its own kind of work. A tidy yard on a Bisbee hillside is something you notice from three streets away.
