Spring is slow to commit up on the Bellemont flats, and then the meadow grass greens all at once and the July storms come in over Volunteer Mountain nearly on schedule. flagstaff native plant and seed builds yards for that rhythm, with native grasses and wildflowers, seed sown to catch the monsoon, and plants chosen because they already understand this altitude and its cold nights. There is a plainness to a high-country yard that turns beautiful when it is done well: bunchgrass moving in the wind, penstemon along a walk, nothing straining to be somewhere else. They plant, seed, mulch, water in, and keep the ground mown and tidy while it takes hold. By the second summer it looks as though it grew there on its own, which was the intention all along.
