In June the thunderheads build southwest of Searcy by two in the afternoon, and everybody who works outside learns to read them. Lincoln Lawn and Garden mows ahead of the rain, gets the trimming done while the grass is still dry, and finishes the walks before the first fat drops hit the pavement. Two days later the whole county is growing again and the route starts over. It is honest, repeating work: cut, edge, clear, move on. When a storm passes and the sun comes back sideways across a freshly cut yard, it is hard to want a different job.
