About Dwight's Brush Hogging

A pasture in western Washington County will go back to briar and cedar in two seasons if nobody argues with it, and arguing with it is the whole point of Dwight's Brush Hogging. Out past Lincoln the fields run up against fencerows of sumac and blackberry, and a rough-cut mower turns that tangle into open ground a person can walk again. The work is loud and dusty: brush hogging overgrown fields and lots, then mowing and trimming the closer grass near the house. Autumn suits it, when the sap is down, the ticks have quit and the hills above town start showing red. What gets left behind is a field with its shape back and a clean boundary where the mowed ground meets the trees.
