In February the Bermuda around Lamar lies gold and flat and the valley wind comes straight through it, and even then a yard tells you whether anybody has been paying attention. Smileys Services, LLC uses that quiet stretch for clearing — hauling off what winter brought down, pulling leaves out of fence corners and beds, tidying the borders so the first green comes up to a clean line. Then the season turns, the river valley opens warm to the south, and it is mowing, trimming and edging again week after week. Most of the route runs between town and the county roads that thread out toward the water. Leaving nothing behind but the smell of cut grass is the part that makes a day feel finished.
