When October gets into the ridges north of Lamar, the hardwoods go rust and gold above the creek bottoms and the whole valley softens at the edges. Clubb lawn care rides that turn in the year: the last careful cuts while the Bermuda still answers, leaves cleared off lawns and walks, limbs and brush gathered up, beds trimmed and left neat for the cold. Come spring the order reverses and the mower goes back to work every week. Clarksville is a few minutes west, Knoxville and London east along the highway, so a route can take in most of the valley in a day. Yards look their truest in fall, and it is good work to leave them that way.
