The St. Francis River slides past Lake City slow and brown, and on an early summer morning the mist comes off it and lies over the whole east side of town. HACKSAW'S LAWN CARE gets going in that hour, mowing while the air is still bearable, trimming out fence corners and tree bases, cutting the border along drives and walks so the lines stay honest. This is low, generous ground — grass grows here like it means it, and a week off shows immediately. Cypress and standing water are never far away, and neither is the next rain. A yard mowed clean against all that green is a small, stubborn act of order.
