Come October the bottomland fields around Kibler go stubble-brown and the fog lies low in the mornings until the valley warms through. Natural State Land Services spends its days on the bigger ground out that way — acreage lawns, long approaches, lots and pasture corners that want mowing before winter, with trimming and edging where the mown grass runs up against a house or a shop. Alma and Dyer are a short run down the road and Van Buren not much farther, so one day can cover a good piece of Crawford County. Winter opens the calendar for clearing: leaves, downed limbs, and all the sticks a season leaves scattered. Wide, evenly cut ground under a valley sky is a plain and genuine kind of good-looking.
