By the middle of July, Greenbrier grass grows faster than anyone can watch it, and the cool hour after supper is when the town finally comes back outdoors. Greenbrier Grass is built around that stretch of the calendar — mowing on a cycle the bermuda cannot outrun, trimming fencelines and foundations, edging walks until the border looks drawn on. A cut lawn changes the light in a yard; it takes the glare down and gives the shade under the oaks somewhere to land. Clippings come off the concrete and go back into the turf where they belong. When growth slows and the leaves start dropping, the work turns to clearing them so the yard goes into winter clean.
