The first cut of the year around Cherokee City is its own particular day — a jacket at daylight, shirtsleeves by noon, and the mower finally pulled off the wall. Wade's lawn care begins there and keeps going week after week, mowing, trimming and edging from that opening cut clear through to the last one in the fall. Out on the county roads the lots run big and the grass grows wherever it pleases, so holding a place level and clear is a matter of showing up rather than any trick. Overgrown corners get knocked back, fence lines get cleaned out, and the clippings are carried off the drive. It is plain work with a visible result, which is most of what makes it good work.
